TITLES OF LEGAL PROFESSIONS IN CORE VARIETIES OF ENGLISH

Despite the general presumption that legal discourse is supposed to be unambiguous and concise, there are apparent markers of its cultural variability which contributes to the formation of language varieties. The study is part of the project focused on the naming of legal professions in different varieties of English. It is limited to the analysis of the positions of prosecution and their titles in the Englishes of the ‘inner circle' [1] and aimed at identifying their similarities and culture specific differences reflecting on the reasons for terminological variability. The data were obtained from dictionaries, legal documents, Internet resources, and some secondary sources. Drawing on the study of pluricentric languages the data were studied with the implementation of comparative, semantic and cultural analyses. The findings show that besides the core titles every variety has its culturespecific titles. The results can contribute to the study of pluricentric languages, and find its application in lexicography, sociolinguistics and teaching legal English to law students.
