In 1960, Cyprus gained independence from the British crown. The young state faced the choice of organizing its own economic course. Full-scale and comprehensive economic development was hampered by the intra-communal conflict as well as the constant intervention of the guarantor countries which were established according to the London-Zurich compromise. The consequence of this was the “Cyprus conflict” which actually divided the island into two parts. This separation to a certain extent predetermined the separate economic development in both parts of the island - southern and northern. The Turkish invasion dealt a severe blow to the Cyprus economy and in particular to agriculture, tourism, mining and quarrying. The loss of the port of Famagusta, which handled up to 83% of general cargo and the closure of the Nicosia international airport additionally complicated the economic situation in Cyprus. The state of affairs required the Cypriot government to take decisive measures to overcome the crisis and seek new ways of developing the country’s economy. The actions taken by the leadership of the republic and the efforts of the people of Cyprus to return to the full functioning of the economy will be called in the future as an “economic miracle”.
