THE CURRENT GUISE OF SELF-OBJECTIFICATION: A SUBJECT FIELD REVIEW

The theory of objectification was outlined by Fredrickson & Roberts in 1997 as a feminist framework for understanding the experiences and repercussions of being a woman in a society exhibiting the cultural phenomenon of constant objectification of female bodies, resulting in a gradual internalization of such action and a concept named self-objectification. The aim of the study was to review the current state of the research field of self-objectification, determine trends and directories of modern research, which the authors are focused on, and analyze their limitations and gaps in knowledge in order to present recommendations for future studies. A qualitative scope of the field review was conducted using the literature published in a period of 2015 - April 2022 in Scopus database. Using developed search strategy 653 articles were screened and 58 were thoroughly analyzed. Retrieved and analyzed documents were identified on 6 research domains: self-perception, mental health, gender perspective, media influence, newly discovered concepts, prevention and rehabilitation discussion, reflecting current research trends on self-objectification. A set of the most current research trends was analyzed, adding to the self-objectification discussion several new highlighted topics, adequate to be further researched and expanded, reviewing newer tendencies in older directions, depicting current limitations of the research field, and suggesting future research recommendations. This review can be used by the professionals dealing with psychological and sexual problems.
