Leopold Senghor wished to reveal to people his own measure of spirituality. A wise politician and exquisite poet, he was tied to western civilization, but at the same time felt its shortcomings and limited character. These contradictions plagued him throughout his entire political career and life as a philosopher. But he always believed that the time would come for Africa, and its civilization would make its weighty contribution to the future of mankind.
