Relevance of the research. In the XXI century mankind faced the growth of knowledge exchange, the need to realize the possibilities of information and communication technologies for education. On the basis of distance learning technologies, it became possible to search for the necessary educational information from the Internet, regardless of location. Researchers state the need for modernization, the formation of a new school corresponding to the modern level of scientific, technological and social development. The scientific novelty of the research results lies in the fact that the concept of mobile learning process in open distance education is developed and justified, which the leading idea is learning using mobile devices at any time and in any place; modified interpretation of the term "mobile learning", which, unlike previously known, is considered as e-learning using mobile devices, regardless of time and place, using special software. The purpose of this work is to analyze the phenomenon of mobile learning, possible classification options for mobile devices, a brief overview of the most effective mobile platforms for implementation and use in the process of learning a foreign language, identifying the advantages and disadvantages of their use in the educational process, taking into account their didactic and methodological functions. The leading idea of the study comes from the paradigm of mobile learning, according to which education becomes more mobile and accessible under the influence of information and telecommunication technologies. The scientific problem of the research is formulated as follows: what are the theoretical and methodological foundations of the mobile learning system in open distance education that meets the modern needs of society. The theoretical significance of the results of the study is determined by its contribution to the development of the foundations of the theory, methodology and technology of open distance education as an integrated system; the article reveals the regularities of the conditions for the implementation of mobile learning in high school. In conclusion, it is necessary to note the high didactic potential of mobile devices and technologies that will help with their competent integration of moving to a new educational model of higher education. A study was conducted among the students of the 10th grade, where 25 people are studied. The students used the following mobile applications: Mobl21, MediaBoard, Memrise, Mondly. As a result of mobile learning, the following competencies have developed: the ability to improve and develop their General intellectual and cultural level; the ability to apply modern methods and technologies of organization and implementation of the educational process at various educational levels in various educational institutions; readiness to use modern technologies of diagnostics and evaluation of the quality of the educational process; readiness to develop and implement methodological models, methods, technologies and teaching methods, to analyze the results of the process of their use in educational institutions of various types. Several students are motivated to create their own mobile application, which will be aimed at the development of grammatical/lexical skills.
