Use of rapeseed oil and water emulsion as diesel fuel

The necessity of using biofuels in internal combustion engines is proved. Advantages of using emulsified fuels in diesel engines are shown. The comparative analysis of physical and chemical properties of petroleum diesel fuel and rapeseed oil and water emulsion is carried out. The results of experimental research of the diesel engine running on these fuels are presented. The object of research is the diesel engine of an automotive type D-243. Research of the diesel engine was carried out on the petroleum diesel fuel and the emulsion of 90% petroleum diesel fuel and of 10 % of water. An opportunity of improving environmental characteristics of the diesel engine running on rapeseed oil and water emulsion is shown. The results showed that the use of the emulsified fuel leads to the significant reduction of the exhaust gases smoke opacity. By the high load mode the transition from petroleum diesel fuel to emulsified fuel leads to decrease of exhaust gases smoke opacity by 26-42%. By operating on emulsified fuel significant reduction of nitrogen oxides emission is noted. At the modes with high loads it makes 8-13 %. At the same time concentration of unburned hydrocarbons in the exhaust gases decreases 1.5-2.5 times. The carbon monoxide emissions growth marked by testing the diesel engine on emulsified fuel can easily be corrected by installing a catalytic converter in the engine exhaust system. In general, the carried out experimental studies have confirmed the prospects of using the rapeseed oil and water emulsion as fuel for the diesel engine. © 2019 IEEE.
