Citizen influence in social media for democratization of communication

The democratization of communication allows citizens accessing to truthful, contextualized and independent information, thus encouraging all actors in society to have opinions and to exercise their right to free expression. Faced with this trend, several countries in Latin America expressed their political will to transform the democratic sense of communication from the legal norm, toward enforcement of legislative initiatives that conceive of communication as a public good trying to strengthen the mechanisms of citizen participation with the aim of improve levels of access to state information. This research analyzes the moves actions and groups voluntarily constituted by civil society, as a mechanism of citizen protest, that using social media as support have been able to influence media coverage influencing as a result public opinion in order to generate social changes. © Springer International Publishing AG 2019.
