This research aims to review the use of new phytotechnologies in urban planning in advanced countries, significantly improving the ecological condition of cities and the quality of life of the urban population. The authors employ an integrative approach that makes it possible to combine different scientific methods (content analysis, statistical analysis of information materials, the study of social and historical documents in the field of environmental and architectural concepts of urban development, etc.). During their search, the authors analyze and generalize scientific material (conclusions from scientific publications on the presented problem). In the search for materials, the authors actively use abstract and bibliographic databases, including Russian Science Citation Index, Google Scholar, Web of Knowledge, Mendeley, ResearchGate, Scopus, and Academia.edu. The search is carried out using such terms as ecopolis, megapolis, green technologies, phytodesign, ecological technologies, and quality of life. During the search, over 100 thousand publications were found that covered this issue. Based on the meta-analysis of the information received, there is a trend in the use of phytotechnologies in urban planning in advanced countries, which makes it possible to solve complex environmental problems of contemporary cities (regulation of the microclimate of the urban environment, reduction of noise load on the city population, air purification, and improvement of the visual environment of the city). The widespread use of advanced eco-phytotechnologies in constructing new cities and reconstructing old ones can significantly improve the state of the urban environment and the quality of life of the urban population. Nevertheless, the greening of cities faces economic pressure and savings in the city budgets of many countries. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.
