Floating dosage forms (FDFs) represent widely used types of gastroretentive drug delivery systems that provide targeted delivery to the upper gastrointestinal tract. This article proposes a classification of FDFs according to which approaches to achieving drug flotation are reviewed based on published works. FDFs present on the market and the concepts used to create them are described. Various parameters and factors affecting the efficacy of this type of dosage form that must be taken into account in the drug development process and the problems that this approach to gastroretention solves are described.
