An electron-cyclotron resonance ion sources

Short review of present status of development is given, and physical principles of ion sources designed for electron-cyclotron heating of a plasma in a magnetic mirror are described. Characteristics of electron-cyclotron resonance (ECR) sources of negative and positive ions are given. ECR-sources have unlimited service life, are reliable, simple in operation and provide production of ions with low energy, spread at a low working pressure. Such characteristics alow using the sources for the solution of following problems: production of ion beams of radioactive gases; application in mass-separators and ion implantators; for purification of radioisotopes for nuclear medicine and so on.
