Japanese experimental fashion design of the late 20th century is a postmodernist art practice. The peculiarity of postmodernism is its complexity and ambiguous interpretations due to the coexistence of different ideas, permanently generating new meanings. Postmodernism involves a lot of citations, reminiscences, references, which operate as the Glass Bead Game. Tradition and modernity meet within art - some certain works and movements. Thus, this article is devoted to the phenomenon of Japanese contemporary fashion design and two strategies of its interpretation: analyzing from the perspective of Western postmodern philosophy, in particular Derrida's deconstruction, and in terms of the national culture, traditional aesthetic and understanding of the beauty. The both theories do not contradict each other. On the contrary, they are even mutually complementary and, consequently, pursue postmodernist pluralism.
