INFLUENCE OF THE N-RU BOND LENGTH AND STERIC LOADING OF THE NITROGEN ATOM ON THE ACTIVITY OF HOVEYDA-GRUBBS CATALYST

Ruthenium-based olefin metathesis catalysts are a powerful tool in organic synthesis. The desire to increase the catalytic activity of complexes and their stability has led to the appearance of a wide variety of catalysts. The article analyzes the literature sources in the period from 1982 to 2020. Based on this analysis, it was found that the length of the nitrogen-ruthenium bond has a decisive effect on the catalytic activity of catalysts. In this review, we have traced the evolution of the modification of the Hoveyda-Grubbs catalyst with a 6-membered N-chelate ring and presented the most popular methods for the synthesis of 2-vinylbenzylamines with various properties. The result of the review is the structuring of information on the topic and the identification of clear patterns, thanks to which we made a conclusion that a long nitrogenruthenium bond or a large steric load of the nitrogen atom allows to obtain more active catalysts.
