The article discusses the artistic and semantic functioning of the mythology “sun” in “The lay of Igor’s campaign”. The motive solar complex in the text of the monument unites four artistic images: the sun itself as an astronomical reality, a solar eclipse as a sacred phenomenon, the pagan sun gods and the allegory of the “princes-sun”. These images are explored in the Old Russian text, its translations and commentaries by Chinese literary critics Wei Huangnu and Li Xiyin. In the process of research, the methods of cultural-historical, mythopoetic and comparative analysis were used. The main object of the research is the consideration of the phenomenon of solar symbolism and metaphor in the “The lay of Igor’s campaign” on a wide background of the solar cult both in the Slavic pagan mythology and in the ancient Chinese epic. It was established that the solar symbolism dominating in the poetics of “The lay of Igor’s campaign” by well-known Chinese writers, translators and literary critics was interpreted in semantic correspondence to the Old Russian text. It is proved that the solar theme is realized in the Chinese epic no less vividly than in Slavic mythology. In ancient Chinese works, the mythologem acquires even broader symbolic associations, emotions, assessments and other rich connotations, the analysis of which is presented in the article. The translations of “The lay of Igor’s campaign” and its comments made by Wei Huangnu and Li Xiyin allowed Chinese philologists and the wide circle of readers to discover the artistic value of the ancient Russian masterpiece, in particular, the signifi cance of the solar eclipse motif, which is the dominant plot component of the work. The article is a cross culture research.
