The article studies the so called "repressive hypothesis" according to which eros and sexuality are suppressed by authoritarian social order. This hypothesis is based of Freudian idea of repressive nature of culture and developed primarily by W. Reich and G. Marcuse. The current analysis points out the main elements of this theory such as the object of suppression, the roots of authoritarian society, general mechanics of repression and the possibilities for non repressive social order.
