Practial overview of commercial connected cars systems in Europe

The Internet of Things (IoT) together with the next-generation (5G) mobile networks are breaking fresh ground for car manufacturers by introducing entirely new layers to the traditional concept of a car. This upgrade-the connected, smart car-comes as a revolutionary way for us to drive and stay in touch with the world around at the same time. In this paper, we focus on description of the Connected Cars technology and also on the various technical approaches how 'smart' vehicles can communicate with each other and their surroundings utilizing new communication protocols and technologies within the 5G mobile systems. Also, the paper presents results obtained from the practical measurements that were conducted based on provided data from commercial mobile network in US, where the Connected Cars exchange information. © 2017 IEEE.
