RUSSIAN AS THE SECOND LANGUAGE: TEACHING BEGINNERS MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY AND LANGUAGE FOR SPECIAL PURPOSES

The article discusses specifics of teaching Russian as the Second Language (RSL) and Language for Special Purposes (LSP) as a whole at the beginners' level in the RUDN University Faculty of Russian language and Elective disciplines. It focuses on teaching medical terminology in student groups of medical profile. As is well known, main LSP component is a term because it concentrates human knowledge of an object or phenomenon. The article treats complex methods to introduce a term as a member of a system of terms of a certain scientific sphere. Graduates of the RUDN University Faculty of Russian language and Elective disciplines should master Russian as a Second Language in the scope of the First Certificate Level and know Russian well enough as it is the language of their future profession so that to continue their studies in Russian in the Russian-speaking environment together with Russian-speaking co-students. These conditions explain the high requirements of RSL and LSP linguistic competence and proficiency. Terms are chosen to make the focus of studies as they form the LSP base and make its central integral components. Term is understood and introduced as an ambivalent unit belonging to linguistic system, on the one hand, and it's a member of a terminological system belonging to a certain branch of science, on the other hand. The LSP terminological intenseness determines the variety of methods discussed in the article. Terms origins condition the structure of LSP manuals and teaching process on the whole. The article describes the data of curricula and LSP manuals for medical students; it demonstrates examples of tasks of the manual "For a future professional." and discusses various forms of student research work - scientific conferences, excursions, video guides and films. Those examples illustrate the application of systemic and complexity principles making the background to learn terminology. On having mastered the proper LSP algorithm and "instruments", a student could read independently scientific texts, correctly produce oral monologues and written texts, designed according to established general requirements. LSP studies are fundamentally important for the future professional education and occupation of the RUDN University Faculty of Russian language and Elective disciplines graduates.
