Reactions of Copper(II) Chloride with 1-(3,3-Dimethyl-3,4-Dihydroisoquinolin-1-yl)-1-(Quinolin-2-yl)Methane (L1): The Crystal Structure of the Reaction Product [ClCu(L1*=L1*)CuCl]

(3,3-Dimethyl-3,4-dihydroisoquinolin-1-yl)(quinolin-2-yl)methane (L1) was studied by spectroscopy (IR, 1H NMR, UV/Vis) in the solid state and in solutions. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the final product of the reaction of CuCl2 with L1 is the binuclear complex [ClCu(L1*=L1*)CuCl] (I), in which the tetradentate bridging-chelating ligand joins two CuCl fragments through four nitrogen atoms, thus closing two six-membered metal-containing rings. The coordination polyhedron of the Cu(I) atom is a distorted triangle (Cu-N 1.99 and 2.09, Cu-Cl 2.115 Å). The possible mechanism of the formation of I in the reaction of CuCl2 with L1 is discussed.
