The role of lamblia in human pathology (Russian)

Among a total of 279 patients hospitalized with the diagnosis of lambliasis this diagnosis was confirmed in only 37 (12.8%). Lamblia can live only in the upper part of the small intestine and do not actually produce toxin. They are not found in other organs. The specific features of Lamblia warrant regarding them as facultatively pathogenic microorganisms. In 10 to 12% of the persons with Lamblia invasion an intestinal dysfunction develops. In a morphologic study of the small intestinal mucosa 4 persons out of 17 with Lamblia invasion demonstrated a superficial jejunitis without atrophy of the mucosa; disorders of parietal digestion were found in 5 out of 15 patients.
