SENSING SOLUTION FOR MONITORING AND DEFECT DETECTION IN PIPELINE SYSTEMS

Despite the fact that pipelines are still the safest means of transporting oil and gas, incidents still occur, and public acceptance of pipelines has been threatened. The subject of this article is various sensor technologies such as, wireless technologies, distributed fiber optic sensors (FOC) and large area electronics (LAE), LDS technologies and pipe-in-pipe technology. First, the advantages and disadvantages of wireless technologies are presented. Then the author talks about the fact that the use of distributed sensors allows to replace a lot of discrete sensors, which is much cheaper. The next point deals with LAE technology, which allows embedding various sensors in thin-film transducers that can be used to create multifunctional sensor sheets for complex monitoring. LDS technologies based on embedded sensors allow monitoring of various pipeline parameters, which will allow detecting leaks promptly by changes of certain parameters. This article also discusses the application of FOC technology with DTS/DAS sensors. And to demonstrate "pipe-in-pipe" technology the author gives a description of dynamic water testing of a special complex installation. Telemetric methods are effective and viable leak detection and monitoring systems. All proposed technologies are capable of detecting (or even preventing) leaks, which protects the environment from accidents and benefits pipeline companies.
