INFLUENCE OF HEAVY METALS ON VIABILITY OF THE NEURONAL CELL CULTURE

The central nervous system (CNS) seems to be particularly vulnerable to toxicity of heavy metals. The aim of the work was to study the effect of two heavy metals: essential - molybdenum and non-essential - cadmium on the viability of undifferentiated and differentiated by neuronal type human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cell culture. Cadmium (Cd) caused death of undifferentiated cells in concentrations of 15µМ and more, molybdenum (Mo) in concentrations of 5 mМ and more. For differentiated cells death occurred in concentrations of cadmium 5 µМ and above and molybdenum in concentrations of 1 mM and above. So we can conclude that Cd is more toxic than Mo and undifferentiated cells are more resistant than differentiated cells, which are closer in morphotype to neurons, indicating their vulnerability.
