GENDER MARKING IN POLITICS WITHIN THE SCOPE OF LINGUISTICS AND THE CHALLENGES OF GENDER- MARKED SPEECH

In the 21st century, the role of politics has been more crucial than ever before. Numerous issues have emerged requiring the world´s politicians to be involved and use their communication skills. English-speaking political figures are no exception, especially considering the status of English as the language of international communication. In the modern political discourse, diversity is viewed as an essential facet. One of the main diversity-related factors in politics is gender identity. This notion can be attributed to the field being disproportionally male-dominated to date.Although many researchers have studied the concept of gender in their work, this area remains intricately varied within the scope of linguistics, with some aspects requiring further investigation. It is no secret that gender disparities, both in politics and elsewhere, are reflected in the language that speakers use. Unlike a sizable number of tongues around the world, English in its present form does not possess a strict grammatical system that assigns a fixed set of linguistic forms to speakers depending on their gender. The relevance of this article can be ascribed to the potential of politics in research: as a catalyst for many global events, it is among the areas prioritized by researchers in different fields including linguistics. The objective of this publication is to analyze the speech of a variety of politicians with a focus on the linguistic units that allow to distinguish between genders. The materials used include written texts as well as video recordings.Qualitative analysis has been employed to process the data being researched.25As a result of this research, the following has been concluded:Gender marking is of paramount importance, especially to translators and interpreters whose target languages have a structure allowing or requiring speakers to refer to their gender;Although English is lacking in terms of gender-marked grammatical forms, in a certain number of scenarios a speaker's gender can frequently be deduced by means of context clues;Languages possessing a structure that revolves around gender marking often place the masculine above the feminine.
