В апреле 2013 г. Орган по разрешению споров завершил рассмотрение спора в отношении соответствия введенного ЕС запрета на продукцию из тюленей обязательствам ЕС в рамках ВТО. Решение ожидается в октябре. Интрига в том, что в основе ограничений лежат морально-этические преставления европейского общества о гуманном обращении с животными. Решение по данному делу может иметь далеко идущие последствия не только для тюленей, но и для фундаментальных основ многосторонней торговой системы.

Will the WTO deter the "invasion" of the seals to the EU?

In April 2013 the Dispute Settlement Body has completed hearings of the dispute over the conformity of the EU ban on the products from seals to its WTO obligations. A decision is expected in October. The intrigue is that the restrictions are grounded on moral and ethical considerations of the European community on the humane treatment of animals. The decision in this case could have farreaching consequences not only for the seals, but the fundamentals of the multilateral trade system.
