Авторы, озабоченные дегуманизацией и деморализацией современного общества, в форме диалога поднимают проблему значимости фундаментальных мировоззренческих ценностей, связанных с культурой христианства, стремсь ответить на вопрос, прочему современный человек отказывается от двухтысячелетних смыслов, лежащих в основании европейской культуры и в целом «осевого времени». Участники диалога размышляют над тем, как христианство может конвертировать свои ценности в современном мире и что для этого необходимо. На основе творчества А. Шмемана дана критика языческого восприятия христианства: пантеистическому магизму противопоставляется трансцендентная вера.

Phil and Soph: Dialogues of the Eternal and the Transient. Reflections on Faith and Unbelief (continuation)

The article reveals fundamental problems of modern man’s consciousness associated with its fundamental characteristics such as faith, disbelief, and atheism, presented as a question-and-answer dialogue. Concerned about the demoralization and dehumanization of the modern society, the authors ponder over the significance of the fundamental world-view values related to the culture of Christianity. They seek to answer the question: why does the modern man reject the two-thousand-year-old purports which represent the basis for European culture and the “axial age” in general? The dialogue participants discuss the way Christianity can convert its values in the modern world and what is required for that purpose.. Besides, criticism of the pagan perception of Christianity is presented on the basis of the works by A. Schmemann: pantheistic magicism is opposed to transcendent faith. The universality of spiritual truth is emphasized on the basis on the unity of the diversity of spiritual knowledge in different cultures around the world. The need for spiritual unity of humankind on the basis of a breakthrough into the sphere of the transcendent, implemented already in the “axial time”, is stressed. The notion of the spiritual archetype of mankind, represented by Truth, Good, and Beauty unified by Love is formulated. This archetype, which represents the essence of man, reveals its diverse aspects of different spiritual traditions. The more aspects it has, the richer mankind is. They are the guarantee of mankind’s survival and salvation.
