The article analyzes the concept of international energy security, it focuses on the importance of sustainable world energy development. The authors substantiate that use of renewable energy represents a huge contribution to maintenance of the international energy security, underlining, that institutional cooperation in this sphere was reflected only in 2009 when the Statute of the International renewable energy agency (IRENA) was adopted. The Statute of an International intergovernmental organization IRENA came into force in July 2010, however until now the Russian Federation is not among 149 signatories of the Statute. It seems that if Russia wishes to adhere to the proclaimed principles of development of renewable energy and diversification of sources of such energy as it is underlined in the Energy strategy of Russia for the period up to 2020, a necessary condition to achieve this purpose is the accession to IRENA and active participation in its activities.
