A control-oriented engine mode! is developed to represent a spark ignited thottleless engine equipped with a variable cam timing mechanism over a wide range of operating conditions. With respect to a fixed-cam timing engine, the VCT mechanism alters the mass air flow into the cylinders, the torque response, end the emissions of engine. The developed model reflects all of these modifications and includes representations of the breathing process, torque and emissions generation. The model has been validated be constructional design of real petrol engine with VCT mechanism and without throttle unit. The work of this thesis is the first systematic approach toward studying and developing one of the various functionalities of a camless engine from a control perspective.
