The complex and contradictory nature of contemporary Arab world - acquiring some features of European civilization and keeping up most of its traditional peculiarities at the same time - can be most clearly observed in the transforming gender roles of women. That is the so called 'role conflict' between the aspiration and possibilities for active position in public life and the patriarchal norms demanding that the woman should be devoted to one's family life. The author examines this conflict which seems to be quite common for European countries but not so easily solved in the Arab world.
