Herbicides can have direct and indirect effects on cyanobacteria and mycorrhizal fungi functions in soil. Direct effects include inhibition of growth, photosynthesis, and nutrient uptake, while indirect effects result from alterations in the composition, function and association of soil microbial communities with other organisms and plants. These effects can have significant consequences for ecosystem function, soil productivity and condition and highlight the importance of considering the unintended consequences of herbicide use in agriculture and other land management practices.
