Тhe article deals with formation and development of the institute of possession and possessory protection in the Roman law and the continental Europe countries during its reception. Particular attention is paid to the research of different possessory claims and some rules to apply them according to the Roman law. It is also concerned with the regulation of possessory protection in France, Germany and Netherlands.
