THE EFFECTS OF BACKGROUND MUSIC ON COGNITIVE FUNCTIONS: A SUBJECT FIELD REVIEW

Background music penetrates into a person's daily life. From 2015 to 2021, the number of Spotify users has grown by more than 313 million, from 68 to 381 million. It is necessary to understand how background music affects a person, how it happens and why, because many people use music to improve their cognitive abilities. This subject field review is aimed at summarizing the available literature on the influence of background music on people's cognitive functions. A total of 779 papers were identified and 30 articles selected and included in the review. The results showed an ambiguous influence of music on the cognitive abilities of people of different ages. The review revealed insufficient attention to the influence of music on children under 10 and the elderly. The results of this review can be used by the professionals working with children and teenagers.
