This study analyzes the microstructural aspects of 35 and U8 carbon steels subjected to deforming cutting using metallographic analysis and scanning electron microscopy. X-ray phase analysis shows that the amount of retained austenite after deformation cutting (DC) is much greater than that after bulk quenching of steels of the same composition. Possible causes of the inhibition of martensitic transformation in steels during DC are considered.
