SPEECH MARKERS OF LEONARDO DICAPRIO (BASED ON TV TALK SHOWS AND INTERVIEWS)

This thesis explores the use of wide range of markers of speech (Discourse markers) in the speech of an American actor, philanthropist, environmentalist Leonardo Di Caprio in various talk shows and spontaneous interviews. For examining the thesis individual markers, approaches for understanding particular speech markers and other data were collected. It explores several functional characteristics of speech, Preparative substitution markers, Interpersonal and reference markers, Discursive markers “you know”, “I mean” and “you see”, adverbs as markers and reports that these speech markers occur more frequently in Di Caprio's speech by making it clear that these are his unique discourse markers. The co-occurrence of discourse markers is taken as evidence to determine the categories for discussion with the suggested functions being secondary interpretations. Surprisingly, there are a lot of markers not even used by others which are particularly representatives of Di Caprio's speech. This thesis demonstrates that the use of discourse markers in Di Caprio's speech correlates with variety of the topics that actor discussed, including the whole notion in the context and different types of activities that he expressed in his answers. Different sorts of factors affect the speaker's choice of discourse markers to be used in his speech, it can likely to be the description of the plot of the movie he had taken part in; expressing his views towards his characters and while declaring his experiences in different condition.
