Gold(I) Complex [(Phen)2H][Au(SCN)2]: Synthesis and Properties

[(Phen)2H]Au(SCN)2] complex was synthesized from aqueous solutions of auric chloride acid, potassium thiocyanate, and an acetone solution of 1,10-phenanthroline. The oxidation number +1 for gold is evidenced by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and by the synthesis of the complex with preliminary reduction of Au(III) to Au(I) by means of sodium sulfite. The presence of [(Phen)2H]+ and thiocyanate groups coordinated to gold through sulfur atoms is confirmed by IR spectroscopy.
