NATIONAL MENTALITY VS INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS IN INTERPRETER'S ETHICS: EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS OF ETHICAL ISSUES PERCEPTION BY STUDENTS

Major Interpreter's professional ethical principles are developed and enshrined in Professional Codes of ethics adopted by international professional organizations. However, no matter how detailed these codes may be, there will always be gaps determined by national specificity of ethical issues perception. The present article focuses on ethical issues of interpreting in legal and healthcare settings within the framework of Public Service interpreting, as well as their perception by students doing Master's course on "Translation and Interpreting for Public Services and Institutions" run by Foreign Languages Departments of Law Institute Peoples' Friendship University of Russia. The article aims to conduct an experiment on student's identification of problematic ethical areas in comparison to International Codes of Professional Ethics. The methodology of research is case analysis and survey on the bases of the developed questionnaire. The Research Findings: students identify problematic ethical issues mostly in line with codes of professional ethics. However, a number of issues both in legal and healthcare settings they do not identify as problematic, involving any moral dilemma on interpreter's part. The article suggests developing Codes of ethics tailored to national mentality specificity on the basis of international codes of ethics.
