Seborrheic dermatitis in patients with psychoneurological disorders

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease. Genetic predisposition, hormonal disorders, neurohumoral, metabolic, and immune changes play an important role in the development of this disease. All these factors lead to activation of pathogenic microbial flora and development of the skin rash characteristic of SD. Malassezia fungus is currently believed to be the main etiological factor in the development of SD. In this paper, the authors draw attention to the characteristic features of seborrheic dermatitis in patients with neuropsychiatric disorders. Authors report their own observations. The use of Nizoral shampoo twice a week for 1 month was recommended as a topical therapy. In 58.3% of patients, no symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis were observed 1 month after administration of Nizoral shampoo. In 41.7% of patients, there was no itching and peeling, but minor hyperemia at the areas of rash was preserved. After the end of therapy, a two-month-long remission was observed in2/3 of patients, while others had only slight peeling. In view of the intense sebostatic effect of 2% ketoconazole, it can be recommended for the use in the form of shampoo for treatment and prevention of seborrheic dermatitis in patients at specialized institutions. The ease of use greatly facilitates the care for patients with psychoneurological disorders. © 2015, Media Sphera Publishing Group. All rights reserved.
