The paper summarizes the main data on etiology and pathogenesis of skin itching. Skin itching is nowadays a very common symptom, but it is often out of the clinician’s area of focus because of the limited possibilities of differential diagnosis. Idiopathic and senile prurituses, for which the means and possibilities for treatment are limited, hold a prominent place in this group of disorders. Material and methods. The clinical aspects of Gistafen (sequifenadin) in the complex treatment of chronic diseases associated with pruritus, in particular senile and idiopathic pruritus, in ambulatory practice were studied. Results. Inclusion of Gistafen in the complex therapy of pruritus demonstrates high clinical efficacy, rapid elimination of symptoms, significant improvement in the quality of life of patients and their adherence to treatment. Conclusions. Sequifenadin (Gistafen) has a pronounced antipruritic effect and high safety profile. It has higher priority as compared to first-and second-generation antihistamines. © 2014, Media Sphera Publishing Group. All rights reserved.
