Among 86 patients who underwent a gastrectomy on account of cancer of the stomach, in 26 cases the operation was carried out by the usual method, and in 60 cases with inclusion of the duodenum into the food passage by the authors' method. During the postoperative period 5 patients of the former group and 6 patients of the latter group died. The majority of deaths occurred in patients who because of widespread disease were subjected to combined procedures of gastrectomy with resection of the tail of the pancreas or splenectomy. The use of gastrectomy with plastic reconstruction did not detract from the immediate results and in the remote period improved function of the gastrointestinal tract, liver and pancreas was observed.
