Advanced biomass-derived materials for energy, batteries, and catalyst support technologies

Huge amounts of plant or animal waste are released from households, agriculture, and industries. To recover these wastes, numerous research groups began to investigate their use for sustainable purposes. With the daily increase of the human population on Earth, the demand for energy increases and the development of low-cost and renewable energy storage systems such as batteries is necessary. Therefore materials of natural origin represent potential and are suitable for applications in energy storage and conversion systems. This chapter delves into the innovative utilization of pomegranate peels (PoPs) as a renewable and eco-friendly resource for advanced materials in diverse technological domains. PoP, often discarded as biowaste, possesses remarkable attributes such as high surface area, porous structure, and abundant functional groups, making them a promising candidate for applications in energy storage, battery technology, and catalyst support systems. The focus is to provide an in-depth analysis of PoP-derived materials for energy storage and catalyst support applications by exploring their composition and characteristics, discussing various methods of extraction and synthesis of active materials, examining their electrochemical properties, and evaluating their performance and efficiency as energy storage devices as well as catalysts. With ongoing efforts to explore alternative and environment-friendly energy storage solutions, such materials exhibit promising avenues for application as both sustainable and cost-effective substances. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
