Historically, subscapularis tendon (SSC) tears have been considered rare injuries - with an estimated incidence of 3.5% per 200 rotator cuff tear injuries. Development of the technologies and arthroscopic techniques has led to a wider recognition of subscapularis pathology. Currently, according to several authors, the probability of SSC tears is about 30% among all shoulder arthroscopies and up to 59% of all arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs. Although rare in isolation, recent evidence suggests that isolated SSC ruptures as associated with 2-10% of all rotator cuff injuries. The purpose of this chapter is to describe subscapularis tendon tear epidemiology, physical examination methods, diagnostic classification, and repair techniques. © 2025 Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
