"GOOD LUCK!" OR "IYI SANSLAR!": A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF RUSSIAN AND TURKISH SPEAKING ETIQUETTE

The article considers the peculiarities of Russian and Turkish etiquette, since it is very often that Turkish students perfectly knowing the Russian grammar and having a good vocabulary find it difficult to communicate with both Russian students and teachers. One may assume that the cause of these difficulties lies in the peculiarities of the national etiquette; in order to reveal these peculiarities, we have performed a comparative analysis of the Russian and Turkish etiquettes. Various examples were taken from different situa-tions presented in the Russian and Turkish languages. As a result, criteria were analyzed which differentiate etiquette forms and similarities and differences in both etiquette sys-tems were identified. The similarities may include the degree of formality of relations between people, the age of the communicants, their attitude towards children. The differ-ences comprise the degree of kinship of communicants, forms of address to strangers, simplicity of Russian and complexity of Turkish etiquette. In addition, difficulties in un-derstanding the etiquette forms by Turkish students were identified. In order to overcome these communication barriers, the teacher is supposed to use interesting, informal means and forms of learning (design technology, “tandem” technology, learning pairs etc.).
