Translation of toponyms: diversity of opinions (on the material of I. Franko’s poetry)

This paper explores the problems of translating the prologue of Ivan Franko’s famous poem “Moses” by English- and Ukrainian-speaking translators. The example of translations of the investigated extract of the work illustrates the literary deviation from the original text. The article also discusses the ways in which translators preserve the rhyme scheme and verse size by using the equivalents of the place names. The subject of this article is the prologue of the poem ‘‘Moses’’ by the Ukrainian writer I. Franko, translated into English. The purpose of the study is to show the different approaches to the translation of place names by native translators of the original language and English-speaking translators. The study aims to: demonstrate, on the basis of the collected translations of the prologue of the poem, different ways of rendering geographical names; describe the use of alternative onyms by English-speaking translators; analyse the principles of preserving not only the size of the poem, but also the semantic load in translations. The hypothesis is that native translators of the author’s language convey the original idea of the poem as accurately as possible, preserving the quantitative and qualitative indicators of the toponyms used. В статье исследуются проблемы перевода пролога знаменитой поэмы Ивана Франко «Моисей» англо- и украиноязычными переводчиками. На примере переводов исследуемого отрывка произведения иллюстрируется литературное отклонение от оригинального текста. В статье также рассматриваются способы, с помощью которых переводчики сохраняют схему рифмы и размер стиха, используя эквиваленты топонимов. Объектом данной статьи выступает пролог поэмы «Моисей» украинского писателя И. Франко в переводе на английский язык. Цель исследования - показать различные подходы к переводу топонимов у переводчиков-носителей языка оригинала и англоязычных переводчиков. В рамках исследования решаются следующие задачи: продемонстрировать на материале собранных переводов пролога поэмы различные варианты передачи географических названий, описать использование англоязычными переводчиками альтернативных онимов, проанализировать принципы сохранения не только размера стихотворения, но и смысловой нагрузки в переводах. Постулируется гипотеза о том, что переводчики-носители языка писателя передают максимально точно исходную идею поэзии, сохраняя количественный и качественный показатели используемых топонимов. Полученные результаты вносят определенный вклад в решение вопросов топонимики и проблематики переводов художественных произведений.
