Endoscopic endonasal removal of nasal cavity chondrosarcoma extending to the base of the skull: a case report

Background: Chondrosarcoma is a rare tumor of the head and neck. Microsurgical resection via open transcranial and transfacial approaches is the main method of treatment for chondrosarcoma of nasal cavity. The use of endoscopic techniques for the treatment of chondrosarcoma is not sufficiently described. We present a unique case of treatment of nasal cavity chondrosarcoma using transnasal endoscopic resection. Case Description: A young male patient suffered from a nasal blockage and a pronounced deformation of the left zygomatic region. He was operated for a chondroma on the left maxillary sinus 16 years ago, then he was not observed. The conducted magnetic resonance imaging showed a giant tumor. A decision was made on preoperative endovascular embolization due to the size of the tumor. The next step was endoscopic surgery, during which the tumor was removed from the nasal cavity, the hard palate, both maxillary sinuses, orbits and the ethmoid sinus. Histological examination revealed morphological features characteristic of G1 chondrosarcoma. As a result, the patient was discharged on day 7 with a decrease in facial deformity, in good health and sent for proton beam thorn. Conclusions: Our experience demonstrates the successful use of endoscopic technologies for the treatment of such rare disease as chondrosarcoma. The patient-friendly and minimally traumatic endoscopic approach has proven itself well. However, more data is needed to clarify the limitations of the method.
