THE ROLE OF GAMING ELEMENTS IN MOTIVATING LANGUAGE LEARNERS: PROS AND CONS

This study investigates the role of gaming elements in motivating language learners by examining the advantages and disadvantages of these gaming features on language learning platforms like Duolingo. The study begins by reviewing existing literature on gamification in education and language learning, highlighting the potential benefits and risks of incorporating gaming elements in language learning platforms. It also introduces different features of gaming in language learning and presents its findings. The study shows that these gamification features are generally beneficial for motivating learners, despite the potential risks of gamification. In fact, learners show higher levels of motivation and engagement, resulting in better learning outcomes. The study concludes by discussing the implications of these findings for the design of online language learning platforms and the role of gamification in promoting student motivation and engagement in language learning.
