The problem of antibiotic resistance: probiotics as a possible solution for children

The article presents brief review of the history of antibiotics development as well as the resistance developed towards antibiotics developed by bacteria. The main mechanisms of antibiotic resistance discussed along with the reasons favoring wide distribution of this phenomenon among pathogenic bacteria. Specific attention is paid to probiotics as factors that can reduce the risk of unnecessary antibiotic use, with focus on the strain-specific effects and role in treating acute gastrointestinal infections in infants. © 2024, Dynasty Publishing House.
