Kant’s Lectures on Logic and Their Significance for Contemporary Kant Studies

The article concerns Kantian logic manuscripts, dating from the early 80s. Such manuscripts include Vienna Logic, Hechsel Logic, Hoffmann Logic, Pölitz Logic, as well as Warsaw Logic and Volckmann Logic. The article sequentially examines the main textological features of these manuscripts, presents the history of their discovery and study. Particular attention is paid to resolving the issue of dating, which is one of the main problems in dealing with this type of sources and playing a key role in determining their significance for the study of the Critique of Pure Reason. The article presents the main points of view on the dating of these manuscripts that existed up to the present time, presents the grounds for their dating in the early 80s. In logic lectures several aspects are highlighted that can be useful in studying the philosophical system of Kant. The most significant of them are the reflections on the division of logic into analytics and dialectics, presented in lecture courses, and the consideration of this division through the canon-organon terminological pair. This division is absent in the Maier’s compendium, which indicates that this division is originally a Kantian innovation. Comparison with earlier lecture notes suggests that this approach took shape only in the 70s, most likely under the influence of Lambert. © 2022, Institute of Philosophy, Russian Academy of Sciences.
