Balancing In-Line Two- and Four-Cylinder Piston Engines

Abstract Means of balancing the reactive tipping torque for in-line two- and four-cylinder internal-combustion engines are considered. Such engines may be balanced by special positioning of the balance shafts so that the inertial forces of the reciprocating masses are in equilibrium. The potential for balancing the reversing reactive torque with different shaft configurations is assessed for the given internal-combustion engines. The proposed balancing method proves more effective for two-cylinder engines. It is expedient to develop devices for controlling the positions of the balance shafts.
