Mass media of Latvia: Its historical development and modernity

The historical and modern stages of development of traditional and new mass media in the media space of Latvia are analyzed in the monograph. The monograph is devoted to the history and development of traditional and new media in the media space of Latvia. Fort the first time the historical experience of the establishment and operation of the mass media system in two languages, Latvian and Russian, is summarized. These two independent mass media systems that exist in the same media space influence each other and create new trends in the development of journalism in the country. Modern changes taking place in the media landscape of world journalism are especially important in post-Soviet countries. Due to a number of economic and historical reasons, the mass media system in Latvia has undergone a significant transformation. The main reason for the sudden appearance of its own media space is associated with the collapse of the USSR, when the former Soviet republics of the Baltic States began to build their own independent national States. For more than two decades, Latvia has been creating its own national information environment in order to consolidate its independence. The variety of publications released in different historical periods is examined in the monograph. The originality of their appearance and their place in the general system of the press are revealed. The processes of establishment, development and extinction of Russian-language journalism as regular and multidimensional phenomena are traced in the monograph. The leading editions of the country are presented in both Latvian and Russian. The conditions and specifics of their appearance and development are described; and the main issues, trends and problems of the country's media space and journalism in general are outlined. The book is addressed to journalists, researchers and teachers of journalism, students.
