Tourism is a broad and important area for certain groups of the population, which has been severely affected by the coronavirus pandemic that began in 2019. In the presence of various studies on the impact of COVID-19 on the tourism sector, all information varies, and little specific information is known about the impact of coronavirus on the development of the industry. To study this area, 9 statistical sources, 30 scientific and news articles from Scopus and Cyberleninka and 4 reports of the UN, the Analytical Center under the Government of the Russian Federation, Rostourism and the KPMG International Network in Russia and the CIS were respectively selected and included in the review. The thematic synthesis of material resulted in 6 analytical themes: pandemic has broken nets in tourism field, COVID-19 does not have univocal value for the tourism sector, coronavirus gave an impetus to the development of domestic tourism, the pandemic and its impact on international tourism has raised some political issues, what happened to the demand for tourist services during the pandemic, the tourism sector can become an impetus to the recovery of the economy after the coronavirus infection. Very few articles and reports paid enough attention to the positive aspects of the pandemic and lockdown in the context of tourism issues, and the review found a lack of attention not to the impact of COVID-19 on this field, but to the development of tourism itself. The results of this review can be used by the professionals in the sphere of tourism or by a wide range of readers interested in the topic of tourism development.
