COMPLEXITY, SOCIETIES AS ORGANISMS, AND FALSE POSITIVE IDENTIFICATION OF MEDICAL THREATS

In this thesis we discuss the relationship between the theories of complexity and complex adaptive systems, the metaphor of societies as organisms, and the adaptation of social systems in response to pandemics. We argue that the increase in complexity of a system, considerable adaptive behaviour upon emergence of a new medical threat, may suddenly become maladaptive after the new threat is subdued.
