To the Issue of the Public Education System on the Territory of the Caucasian Educational District in 1848-1917. Part 2 [К вопросу о системе народного образования на территории Кавказского учебного округа в 1848-1917 гг. Часть 2]

The article examines the system of public education in the Caucasus (the territory of the Caucasian Educational District) on the basis of extensive statistical material. This part analyzes the development of the system of public education in the period of 1900-1917. The source base for the study was the annual “The Reports of the trustee of the Caucasian educational district on the state of educational institutions of the Caucasian educational district”. These reports were published in the period of 1884-1914. They reflected data on the system of public education subordinate to the Ministry of Public Education. In conclusion, the authors state that the system of public education on the territory of the Caucasian educational district at the beginning of the 20th century continued to develop dynamically. For 14 years from 1900 to 1914 the number of educational institutions and the number of students increased by 2.5 times. The greatest successes were in the field of secondary and primary education, where the number of educational institutions increased by 3 times, lower education developed less dynamically. As for the gender balance among students, the female education during this period made a significant breakthrough in primary school, where the proportion of girls increased from 25 to 33 %. At the same time, in secondary school by 1914, almost parity was already observed between boys and girls. All this testified, in the authors' view, that public education has firmly entered the way of life of the population in the Caucasus. Copyright © 2022 by Cherkas Global University
