The concept of freedom of expression through the language and vision of battiato's art

Franco Battiato's multifaceted talent (music, poetry, cinema, painting) is inherent to his way of expression. The Italian artist managed to set in motion a new cutting edge method of making music where syncretism, call for evolution, perennial philosophy, poetry and even meditation play an essential role. A brilliant mix between pop and high culture is one of his most successful features as well as a conscious intention to play with meanings, to mix them up, often with a razor-sharp sense of humor too. The collaboration with the famous philosopher Manlio Sgalambro makes all this even more elegant and sophisticated. The concept of freedom of expression is crucial in Battiato's work and he confirms it by singing in different languages and quoting different pictures of the world: syncretism is the core of this holistic approach to art, music in Battiato means knowledge. He doesn't only sing, he pushes us thinking about the most philosophical matters, the confrontation with the masters of thought through the centuries is essential and constant and the listener is constantly compelled to an inner analysis. The intent of this paper is showing that this is not a target the artist imposed himself, rather the natural attitude he holds in making art.
